About Endicott Rock Historic Site

New England may hold no older public monument: on 1 August 1652 surveyors cut the name of Bay Colony governor John Endicott into this rock, with the initials of four other men. They took the spot for the source of the Merrimack, and the 1629 charter drew the colony's northern edge three miles beyond it.
