Shumway Lake Trail by the campground is closed on the north end of the lake for safety reasons. The section of trail closed is posted.

Vehicle permits Permits can be purchased online prior to arrival. All vehicles entering a state park must display a valid year-round or one-day Minnesota state park vehicle permit affixed to the lower right-hand corner of the windshield.
Current fishing regulations Download the 2026 fishing regulations. Check the seasonal update for any additional information on the park, including special notes for RV campers, building and trail updates. Savanna Portage will host a youth hunt October 24 and 25. The park will be unavailable to anyone without a special youth hunt license these days. Updated September 3, 2026
Six miles of marsh and swamp took the Ojibwe, Dakota and voyageurs five days to cross, and their portage is still walkable. Follow the Continental Divide Trail between the Mississippi and Superior watersheds, swim at Loon Lake, fish four lakes and a river.
$7 per vehicle — One-day vehicle permit $7; year-round permit $35 ($26 for an additional vehicle, $30 motorcycle, $12 with a disability permit). Free year-round permits for disabled veterans, active-duty military and members of Minnesota’s 11 federally recognized tribes.
