No Swimming Due to strong currents in the river, swimming is not allowed anywhere at this state park. Updated September 4, 2026
Swirling grit bored potholes into the basalt here, and there is nothing else like them on the river. Climbers work the cliffs over the Dalles; Minnesota set its half aside in 1895, Wisconsin the other bank in 1900.

$7 per vehicle — One-day vehicle permit $7; year-round permit $35 ($26 for an additional vehicle, $30 motorcycle, $12 with a disability permit). Free year-round permits for disabled veterans, active-duty military and members of Minnesota’s 11 federally recognized tribes.
