About Piedmont Charcoal Kilns State Historic Site
Moses Byrne built four conical limestone kilns at Piedmont in 1869 to make charcoal for Utah's iron smelters, and three and a half still stand, each 30 feet high. Timber from the Uinta Mountains fed them, and the Union Pacific hauled the charcoal to Utah.
