June 13, 2026 - New world screwworm has been found in parts of Texas.

Show all 4 notices

Check your pets and livestock often. If you see unusual wounds or maggots, do not move the animal. Call the Texas Animal Health Commission at (800) 550‑8242 or contact a private veterinarian.
For wildlife with suspicious wounds or maggots, notify park staff or call (512) 389‑4505.

Dinosaur Tracks
Aug. 24, 2026 - Due to past flooding, the dinosaur tracks are covered with muddy algae and water and are not visible or accessible. The Joe Johnston Trail is still muddy at the dinosaur tracks; we don't advise crossing.

Park Closures
The park will be closed on the following dates:
10 p.m. on Nov. 16 to 7 a.m. on Nov. 20
10 p.m. on Nov. 30 to 7 a.m. on Dec. 7
10 p.m. on Jan. 4 to 7 a.m. on Jan. 8
10 p.m. on Jan. 11 to 7 a.m. on Jan. 15
Only permitted hunters will be allowed on these dates.

About Government Canyon State Natural Area

Over 12,000 acres of rugged karst hills, deep canyons, and actual dinosaur tracks just outside San Antonio. Hike or bike the extensive trail network, view dramatic overlooks, and explore the historic Zizik homestead.
