Posted Sep 3, 2026 - General Alert for Cimarron: Cimarron Canyon is undergoing improvements and upgrades as part of New Mexico State Parks Statewide – Outdoor Recreation Restroom Improvement Project. Construction efforts will impact both day use areas and campgrounds. Be sure to check for and review park alerts and notifications prior to your visit. For the affected areas, we anticipate noise and other construction-related impacts for the duration of these construction activities. Please adhere to all signage and electronic alerts for your safety. For up-to-date information, please call the park at 505-414-9840. Clayton Lake State Park and Dinosaur Trackway has closed access to the boat ramp and is prohibiting the use of motorized boats due to declining water levels and related safety concerns. The lake remains open for non-motorized vessels, including canoes and kayaks. Motorized boat access will be restored once water levels improve and conditions allow for safe use of the boat ramp.

Posted Jul 31, 2026 - Due to ongoing construction to replace vault toilets at Clayton Lake State Park & Dinosaur Trackways, the vault toilet facilities located at the dinosaur parking lot, Camp Cove, the South Loop, and the Rock Gardens will be closed. The comfort station, as well as the double vault toilets at North Point and along the Nature Trail, will remain open for visitor use. Please exercise caution and be aware of construction activity while visiting the park.

Posted Oct 20, 2025 - Cimarron Canyon State Park is open for day use. Day use hours are from 6 AM- 9 PM. NM Residents with a NM drivers license or license plate do not need to purchase a pass until May 1st. Nonresidents to purchase a $10 pass per day per vehicle.

Posted Aug 10, 2024 - CAUTION: Tussock Moth has been identified in Cimarron Canyon State Park. The Tussock Moth caterpillars have thousands of tiny hairs covering their bodies. The female moths, egg masses, and cocoons also have hairs. Tussockosis can occur as an allergic reaction from direct contact with insects or airborne hairs. Symptoms may include itchiness, skin rashes, skin irritation, watery eyes, runny nose, and sneezing. More severe reactions, though less common, include blisters, coughing, shortness of breath, wheezing, and chest tightness.

Posted Aug 21, 2023 - Trail Closures-The Colin Neblett backcountry including Tolby and Maverick Trails are closed to all entry during deer fawning and elk calving May 15-July 31. Clear Creek Trail remains open May 15-July 31. The backcountry and ALL trails are closed during big game hunts as published in the NM Rules and Info Booklet. Licensed hunters and their hunting party are exempt from closures during their hunt/scouting period.
