About Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion
The forty-room Portsmouth house of Benning Wentworth, New Hampshire's first royal governor from 1741 to 1767, overlooking Little Harbor. Five architectural periods are legible in it, along with a hand-carved mantelpiece, a council chamber and a spy closet; the lilacs on the grounds descend from stock Wentworth imported.
