About Washington Monument State Park
The first monument finished in George Washington's memory, a squat stone tower raised by the citizens of Boonsboro in 1827, stands on the crest of South Mountain. The Appalachian Trail runs past it, and mid- September brings hawks, eagles and falcons down the ridge.
