About South Mountain State Battlefield
The gaps of South Mountain — Crampton's, Fox's and Turner's — where the first major Civil War battle on Maryland soil was fought on 14 September 1862. Interpretive trails run from each gap, and the Appalachian Trail links them along the crest.
